Course Overview

In association with Mike Taylor Education we are excited to present our new barbering qualifications based out of our new state of the art barbering academy.

The Barbering NVQ Level 2 is a nationally recognised qualification ideal for anyone who is serious about a career in barbering. During this course you will complete a minimum of 150 haircuts on live clients guaranteeing that you will gain real barbershop cutting experience and leave ready for the workplace.

Be taught by Mike himself, chairman of the British Barbering association and the first ever master craftsman barber in the UK. We pride ourselves on a provision that will fully prepare you for industry taught and designed by experts in their fields.

Course Content
This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for barbering and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a junior barber. You must achieve all mandatory units which include:

Advise and consult with clients
Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work
Cut men's hair using basic techniques
Cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques
Dry and finish men's hair
Create basic outlines and detailing in hair

Throughout this qualification, learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology and health and safety. They will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to advise and consult, and provide a range of cutting and barbering services specifically for men's hair, which includes shaving and creating facial hair shapes. In parallel, learners will develop their communication and customer service skills, their awareness of environmental sustainability and their commercial skills, all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem solving and research skills will also be developed. 

In addition to completing mandatory units, learners are required to achieve nine credits from optional units which include (this list is not exhaustive): assist with shaving services, relax hair, perm and neutralise hair, plait and twist hair and colour and lighten men's hair.
English and Maths
If you are aged under 19 and if you do not hold a GCSE grade C or higher in English and Maths, you will be required to work towards these qualifications.
Entry Requirements
5 D's (numerical grade 3) at GCSE including English and Maths.
Exams, practical demonstrations and workbooks.

VTCT Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Barbering
Equipment Required
You will be required to purchase your own kit and handbook. More details will be given upon application.
Financial Information
If you are aged 16-18, tuition and registration fees are free.
If you are aged 19 or over, tuition and registration fees are payable at the start of each year of study; please ask for details.
If you are aged 24 or over, you may be eligible for a Student Loan to assist with your fees; please ask for details.
Staged Payment
A staged payment plan is available to help with course fees.
Reduced Fees
Fee concessions may be available if you are out of work, on low income or studying for your first Level 1 or Level 2 qualification.
If you are unable to pay any of the course costs, or need financial assistance you may be eligible to receive a college bursary.

Travel Subsidy
BCoT offers discount on travel to and from the college for full time students. We offer 50% discount on rail fares and if you are travelling by bus, we offer 25% off Zone 2 buses outside of Basingstoke. There is financial assistance available for those families on a low income.
