Course Overview

This qualification can prepare you for appropriate employment in this area and is suitable for those who have decided that they clearly wish to enter a particular specialist area of work. It is broadly equivalent to three GCE A Levels.

Some learners may wish to gain the qualification in order to enter a specialist area of employment or to progress to a higher education foundation degree, HND or other professional development programme, while others may want to extend the specialist nature of the subjects they have studied already.

Course Content

You will receive instruction, guidance and encouragement to practise and develop the skills necessary to achieve the award. The course covers a wide range of subjects including:

English and Maths
If you are aged under 19 and if you do not hold a GCSE grade C or higher in English and Maths, you will be required to work towards these qualifications.
Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs Level 4 and above/Grade A*- C (to include English, Maths and preferably Science) or a BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care (Merit). 

All students must provide evidence of valid tetanus immunisation.


The course is continuously assessed through assignments, projects and case studies. Students will develop a responsible and co-operative approach to working on their own and in groups. The course uses practical activities, presentations and involvement with local businesses wherever possible.


This course offers appropriate work experience to complement the knowledge and skills you will learn at College. It includes a number of visits including Crufts Dog Show, Marwell Zoo, London Zoo, Natural History Museum, Monkey World, Birdworld, Laverstoke Park Farm, Mill Cottage Farm Experience and Hawk Conservancy. 

It is expected that costs will be up to £100 per year to cover books, travel, and enrichment activities.

What does this course lead to?

This course is a recognised route into Higher Education. Students may progress to a Higher National Diploma or Degree course.

Employment opportunities include animal sector (kennels, catteries, pet shops, animal welfare organisations, animal collections, etc) at supervisory or managerial levels based on ability and experience.

Equipment Required

Students will be required to purchase navy blue overalls and a pair of wellingtons boots which are essential for the course. 

Additional Costs

Each student is responsible for purchasing general stationery items together with a USB memory stick.

Financial Information
If you are aged 16-18, tuition and registration fees are free.
If you are aged 19 or over, tuition and registration fees are payable at the start of each year of study; please ask for details.
If you are aged 24 or over, you may be eligible for a Student Loan to assist with your fees; please ask for details.
Staged Payment
A staged payment plan is available to help with course fees.
Reduced Fees
Fee concessions may be available if you are out of work, on low income or studying for your first Level 1 or Level 2 qualification.
If you are unable to pay any of the course costs, or need financial assistance you may be eligible to receive a college bursary.

Travel Subsidy
BCoT offers discount on travel to and from the college for full time students. We offer 50% discount on rail fares and if you are travelling by bus, we offer 25% off Zone 2 buses outside of Basingstoke. There is financial assistance available for those families on a low income.
