GCSE Maths
Course Overview

This is a one-year course, which develops mathematical skills and provides a suitable grounding for further study in most subject areas in particular mathematics and science. GCSE maths is required for a wide range of jobs and training courses.

Course Content

There are four areas of study:

  • Using and Applying Mathematics 
  • Number and Algebra 
  • Shape and Space 
  • Data Handling


After completing this course you should be able to: 

  • Apply knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of basic mathematics to solving theoretical and practical mathematical problems 
  • Have gained the basic foundation in mathematics required for further study and a wide range of employment 
  • Study independently and co-operatively
  • Feel more confident about mathematics 
  • Work with and without a calculator


Students are reminded that this is an academic course and they must allow time for private study and home assignments in addition to lectures. Students must attend for a minimum of 90% to complete the course.

Entry Requirements

Applicants over 19 years - GCSE maths grade D standard; 16-18 years - GCSE maths grade D, a meeting, prior to enrolment, with the lecturer is strongly recommended. ESOL students must demonstrate appropriate competence in the use of English language.

This course is free for learners who do not have GCSE A*-C.


Assessment is set by Edexcel (www.edexcel.org.uk). There are two different tiers of entry; Foundation and Higher. Level of entry will be decided in consultation with your lecturer. There are two written papers (in May/June) each worth 50% of the final mark. One of the written papers is done with a calculator, the other one without. There is no coursework component.

What does this course lead to?

GCSE Maths is extremely important for a wide range of vocational courses and employment.

Equipment Required

A textbook - to be advised, a calculator - to be advised, mathematical instruments eg ruler, protractor, and pair of compasses. The estimated cost for books is £15.
