BTEC Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training
Course Overview

This is course is validated by Edexcel. It complies with the new overarching professional standards in initial teacher training required of all teachers entering the sector after 2001. The rationale for the programme is to equip teacher trainees with the initial knowledge and practical skills required for teaching in the post compulsory sector.

This course is designed for students with a full teaching role, meaning a teaching role that carries the full range of teaching responsibilities and requires the teacher to demonstrate an extensive range of knowledge, understanding and application of curriculum innovation or curriculum delivery strategies in the post compulsory sector. This course is not appropriate for those in a training or instructing role.

Course Content

This level 5 course (formerly known as DTLLS) covers the following modules:

  • Theories, principles and models in education and training
  • Developing, using and organising resources in a specialist area
  • Teaching, learning and assessment in education and training
  • Developing teaching, learning and assessment in education and training
  • Action research
  • Teaching in a specialist area
  • Wider professional practice and development in education and training 
Entry Requirements

Essential
An interview is required

Level 4 Education and Training course or equivalent
GCSE Maths and English Level 2 or equivalent
Evidence of a minimum of 100 teaching hours in the post compulsory sector (confirmed during interview) over the year of the course
If English is not your first language: IELTS 6.5 (including 6.5 in writing)

Desirable
Educated to level 3. It is expected that candidates teach within the local area, if this is not the case a charge will be made for observations out of the area - please discuss at interview.

Assessment

Assessment for the course is through a range of assignments. e.g. reports, essays, a portfolio. You must have eight observations, four of which must be graded a 'good' or better.
