Level 3 Extended Diploma in Computing
Course Overview
The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Computer Science, is a 2 year course which aims to further develop your knowledge and practical skills. With the opportunity to take industry standard qualifications you will gain the fundamental skills, which will help you prepare you for a specialist career in IT.

Year 2

In your second year you have the opportunity to specialise by choosing either the systems development pathway: 
  • Computer Games Development
  • Object Oriented Programming
  • Mobile Apps Development

 

or Networking & Cybersecurity Pathway:
  • Computer Networking
  • Managing and Supporting Systems
  • Virtualisation 

To enhance employment opportunities the course may also have additional qualifications built into the programme, eg CompTIA, MTA and CISCO CCNA1 Industry Standard.

English and Maths
If you are aged under 19 and if you do not hold a GCSE grade C or higher in English and Maths, you will be required to work towards these qualifications.
Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs grades between 9 - 4 including English Language and Maths and GCSE Computer Science, which must be a grade 5 or above. GCSE Computer. Progressing learners will need to have achieved BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in ICT at Merit level or above and hold a Level 2 in both Maths and English.

Assessment

The course is continuously assessed by both practical and written assignments and 4 external assessments.

Activities

This course includes a number of visits to complement the knowledge and skills you learn at College and optional residential trips are often organised; these can cost between £300 and £600.

What does this course lead to?

This course is a recognised route into Higher Education. Students may progress to a HNC Certificate.

Employment opportunities range from IT Technician, Network Administrator, Software Design and Development and Database Administrator.

Students will be required to purchase a reference book; details will be provided on enrolment.

Financial Information
If you are aged 16-18, tuition and registration fees are free.
If you are aged 19 or over, tuition and registration fees are payable at the start of each year of study; please ask for details.
If you are aged 24 or over, you may be eligible for a Student Loan to assist with your fees; please ask for details.
Staged Payment
A staged payment plan is available to help with course fees.
Reduced Fees
Fee concessions may be available if you are out of work, on low income or studying for your first Level 1 or Level 2 qualification.
Bursaries
If you are unable to pay any of the course costs, or need financial assistance you may be eligible to receive a college bursary.

Travel Subsidy
BCoT offers discount on travel to and from the college for full time students. We offer 50% discount on rail fares and if you are travelling by bus, we offer 25% off Zone 2 buses outside of Basingstoke. There is financial assistance available for those families on a low income.
