HNC in Construction and the Built Environment
Course Overview

These courses are aimed at people already employed within the built environment sector. The specific careers will depend on the chosen pathway. Employment opportunities range from working in in-house department for a large public or commercial company, including local authorities, housing associations and consultancies to specialist contractors or large multi-service companies offering a range of design, build, finance and management.

Built Environment courses provide an academic platform to enter a number of post HNC courses, such as the BA (Hons) in Architectural Technology at Southampton Solent University.




Course Content

On this course you will:

  • Gain a qualification to compliment your industrial skills and experience
  • Develop technical and management skills required in construction
  • Gain skills to boost your career progression or enable you to study a degree

 

Modules will  include units such:

  • Science of the Built Environment
  • Construction Management (CM)
  • Building Technology
  • Construction Surveying
  • Management in the Built Environment
  • Construction Technology Project
  • Introduction to Architectural Technology
  • Principles of Business Environment (this unit includes Law and Health and Safety)




 

 

Entry Requirements

Applicants should have the following:

  • Five GCSE (grades C  or above) including Mathematics and English
  • BTEC Extended Diploma in Construction and Built Environment or Construction related discipline
  • Relevant access to Higher Education Diploma
  • Other qualification which are considered to be equivalent of the above

Applicants with relevant industry experience will also be considered.  They will be invited to an interview with the course leader and may be asked to undertake a short piece of written work.

Please be aware that home and EC students who are aiming for a qualification at a level that is equivalent to, or lower than one they already hold, will not be fundable by HEFCE and a full-cost fee will be charged. The only exemptions are for students in receipt of Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA), students who have previously attained a Foundation Degree, or students who are enrolling on a Teacher Training course.

Assessment

Your progress will be assessed through assignments, presentations, time controlled assessment and  projects. There is no final exam.

What does this course lead to?

Upon completing the course you will be able to go on to employment in many different branches of industry, including management or technician roles. Built Environment courses provide an academic platform to enter a number of post HNC courses, such as the BA (Hons) in Architectural Technology at Southampton Solent University.
